Gramercy Tavern 4

Linda’s photo of Lewis during our fourth course of the spring tasting menu, along with a glass of Oregon Willakenzie 2006 Yamhill-Carlton pinot noir, shows that we enjoyed our meal.
We started with glasses of Iron Horse Brut classic vintage 2002 sparkling wine from GreenValley, California. They provided a very good start for our celebration and went as well as possible with the first course: calamari and carrot salad with toasted pine nuts and preserved lemon vinaigrette. The rest of the dishes were excellent or very good, but the calamari salad was not sparkling, and it was over-acidic.
Things moved up to normal Gramercy Tavern level with the second course: striped bass with sunchokes, mizuna and lobster vinaigrette, which came with a nice piece of lobster and with a few small mussels.
Our third course was an excellent hot smoked sablefish on a bed of potato purée, leeks and with American Paddlefish roe. Both the fish and the bed of potato purée and leeks had a delightful flavor. Unfortunately Linda’s early blog photography efforts in New York did not result in a digital image of this fine dish.
The fourth course was a very good rack of pork and braised belly with spring vegetables and fingerling potatoes. The crisp braised belly really perked up the round slice of pork.
We both chose the apple clafouti for dessert, which was served with a graciously-offered apple juice fortified with brandy (not as strong as Calvados), a light and excellent accompaniment. Lewis’ plate came inscribed with “Happy Birthday Lewis”, another Gramercy Tavern gracious gesture.
For some hard-to-fathom reason the restaurant was only about one-third full this day for lunch, a rare happening in our experience. Perhaps because it was Tuesday of Passover Week? The welcome was warm and the service was excellent.
