The Royal Riviera, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat 2

April 3, 2008

On April 1, 2008, Paul and Renate invited Véronique, Jean-Yves, Linda and me to lunch on the terrace of the Panorama restaurant at the Royal Riviera Hotel. Spring has been slow arriving and this was our first lunch of the season outside.

We assembled at a table in the spacious main hall where we enjoyed a champagne apéritif and hors d’oeuvres while we looked at the Menu du Marché, 51 €, and ordered.

After we were seated on the terrace, a light truffled velouté of courgettes was served as the amuse-gueule.

All six of us started with the Risotto crémeux aux champignons des bois, dentelle croustillante au parmesan. I thought this was a bit gooey and light on mushroom flavor, but it was generally enjoyed. The bacon gave a good, crunchy contrast.

Four of us then went on to the Palette de poissons cuisinés comme une bouillabaisse “à notre façon.”  This was lovely with various small pieces of fresh fish and seafood and a real bouillabaisse flavor in the broth.

Linda and Paul had the Poitrine de canette de Barbarie à la cardamone, navet glacé et endives caramélisées. They found the duck to be flavorful and well matched with the turnips and endives.

For dessert the three ladies had the Tiramisu à la framboise, sauce aux éclats de pistache. It was well done and not overly sweet.

The gentlemen had the Mousse glacée au praliné fruité, sorbet fraise. It was nicely done and refreshing.

Coffee was served with very nice mignardises, including one coconut one I found irresistible.

We left having enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.
