The Ferry Building Farmers’ Market, San Francisco

On January 26, 2008, Linda and I went to the famous Saturday Farmer’s Market in and around the old Ferry Building at the Embarcadero at the end of Market Street. Inside the building contains many food shops and restaurants which are open daily. I had feared that the stalls and tents outside would not be active on this winter day with rain threatening, but there were plenty of farmers and other vendors with products which grow in the Northern California winter: many kinds of root vegetables, greens, cabbages, late fruit etc.  Happily, there were no tomatoes, eggplants or artichokes to be seen. There are only a few fish vendors.

The winter vegetables were very fresh and local.

Many types of greens, both for salads and for cooking, are fresh in the Northern California winter.

Late regional fruits include persimmons and pomegranates.

The varieties of cultivated mushrooms keep growing.

Of course, there are flowers.

There are meats, crabs, oysters and fresh eggs.

There are quite a few bakeries and pastry shops.

There is freshly roasted coffee. The tea shop is more Chinese than English.

Prepared food counters of all kinds. It is almost Valentine’s Day. A knife grinder is always useful.

    Whenever I visit Wendy and Sam and stay in the city I walk to the Ferry Building from my hotel and get lunch from one of the stalls and take it outside to view the bay. Haven’t been to the Saturday Farmer’s Market yet but after seeing your photos, I will do that next time I am in SF.
